There’s a pair of woodpeckers, ladder backed woodpeckers I think, that frequently visit. They make quite a bit of noise when they pound on the wood pole seeking insects to eat. The red ‘hat’ on its head identifies this one as a male.
Woodpecker on Utility Pole
Got these on Sunday, I think this is a female Cooper’s Hawk, but it could be a sharp tailed hawk. This bird was right by our house, it flew under the porch roof.
I saw a huge male Cooper’s hawk on Saturday, but he was gone by the time I got to my camera.

Jay’s Bird Barn in Prescott AZ, where I buy my bird feeding supplies, celebrated their 5th anniversary today. They brought in some birds of prey that were bred in captivity or injured and could not be returned to the wild. Here’s some images I got. Click on image for a larger view.

I got some more ladder backed woodpecker images (click on images for a larger view). I got about a dozen, these are the ones I liked best. The images were taken in late afternoon, the sun was low and came right under the tree branches to lighten up the tree trunk, bird feeders, and the woodpecker.

This male ladder backed woodpecker is hunting for insects on our Ponderosa pine tree. The female does not have the red cap on her head. Last year I saw these often but have not seen any for a while until today. Click on image for a larger view.
