Making kids worth less (economically)

A very clearly written article at the Mises Institute about how social welfare systems eliminate economic incentives for people to reproduce. “Every kind of socialism creates perverse incentives, and socialism directed to the family perverts the family”. How true, and how sad.

When I read material like this I wonder what will happen when, not if, these systems collapse.

Emergency Preparedness at “how to save the world”

Dave Pollard’s How To Save the World had an interesting take on emergency preparedness. He lists several good, well known suggestions like have a kit with food, water, medications, etc. His list is missing one big item, and that’s a firearm with ammunition – that you know how to use. Violence is possible, do not be victim.

Interestingly, he says “It’s not human nature to be prepared for anything that isn’t highly probable and imminent …” Probably so.

I’ve been reading this blog for a few weeks, much of the content is thought provoking.

Rails 1.2 Deprecations

I just updated my Ruby on Rails to 1.2

I’ve got a cascade of deprecations that I’m correcting:

<% end_form_tag %> to </form>

<% start_form_tag %> to <% form_tag %>

:post => true in a link_to(), changed to :method => “post”

More will likely appear …
