Match Volunteers – or lack thereof

I had a couple of shooters who would regularly show up and help set up matches. Unfortunately, both developed health problems and can no longer do the physical work involved.

Does anyone have any tips to share on how to motivate a few of the shooters to lend a hand with setting up? Personally, I’m a more than a little frustrated and disgusted with the lack of participation. Yes, some folks work on set up day and some can’t do the work. But most of the shooters don’t fall into either category.

Overall, about 10% of the membership of our shooting club does 100% of the work … until we get burned out, anyway.

IDPA Match Director Tasks

Ever stop to list all the things you do as a match director? I just made a quick list:

– plan the match
– update IDPA page on web site with match date and time,
if this is not the regular date / time send out mass email
– set up match
– phyiscally set up targets, props, etc.
– write up stage instructions
– note inventory of targets, inform board when more need to be ordered
– prepare squad buckets with tape, pens, timers (test each), score books
– note inventory of score sheets, liability waivers, tape,
staples and order as needed
– run the match
– inspect stages for wind damage and repair as needed
– put out liability waiver book, pens
– collect fees (make sure you have cash for change making)
– give out scoresheets and squad buckets
– conduct shooters meeting
– during match, answer stage and/or rules questions,
handle safety concerns, keep the peace as needed
– collect squad buckets, put away supplies and equipment,
gather score sheets
– lock up trailer and shed at end of day
– compute and distribute scores
