One of our Christmas traditions is to give restaurant gift certificates. Our families already have way too much stuff and don’t need any more. But everyone likes to eat out. This is especially true during the holiday season when time is at an even greater premium than usual. We do buy gifts for our grandchildren, there is always something they want.
The other day I went into Applebees for some gift cards and got a surprise: For each $50 certificate I bought I got a card worth $10. For the math challenged this is a 20% discount. I can either give the card I bought and the added $10 card – giving a $60 gift for the price of $50 or keep the $10 card for my own use and thus get a 20% discount on the purchase.
