Birthday Party – Staying in Touch with Family

On Sunday we went to a birthday party for Gary’s uncle Bob in Cottonwood, AZ. I had a great time reconnecting with some family members we don’t see often. I found it quite joyful. Some live out of state, some in the next town over from us. One gentleman said to me, “I have not seen you in a while”.  When I remarked that we live within a 30 minute drive, he said his brother lives a mile from him and they only see each other once a year. Everyone agreed it was wonderful to have a family gathering that was not a funeral. Gary’s mom was one of eight siblings of which 3 are alive. The family went through a period where we were attending one funeral after another.

Gary and I decided that we will make a real effort to get out of the pattern of not visiting family. There’s something deeply primal and natural about being with family.

Here are a few photos:

Are You a Psychopath? Take This Test

Read this question, come up with an answer and then scroll down to the bottom for the result.

A woman, while at the funeral of her own mother, met a guy whom she did not know. She thought this guy was amazing. She believed him to be her dream guy so much, that she fell in love with him right there, but never asked for his number and could not find him. A few days later she killed her sister.

Question: What is her motive for killing her sister? [Give this some thought before you answer], see answer

Answer below …

Answer:

She was hoping the guy would appear at the funeral again. If you answered this correctly, you think like a psychopath. This was a test by a famous American Psychologist used to test if one has the same mentality as a killer.

Many arrested serial killers took part in the test and answered the question correctly.

If you didn’t answer the question correctly, good for you.

If you got the answer correct, please find another blog to read 🙂

OS X Leopard, Apache, localhost, web sharing

apache, os x, web sharing

After many failed attempts, I have found out how to get web sharing with apache to work on my mac with leopard os x 10.5.2

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6184905

Update 2: I’ve been using web sharing on my MBP and encountered an annoyance. In Sharing under System Prefrences, it shows http://192.168.1.3/~dagny/ as the URL of my home page. This is fine until my rounter assigns my mac a new IP address,  a normal occurance. If I bookmarked the URL I will get an http error. The fix is to change the IP address (192.168.1.3 in this case) to localhost. So the URL becomes http://localhost/~dagny/    localhost is the IP shorthand for “this machine”  and is the loopback ip address (127.0.0.1) NOTE: This is only good when I access the page from my computer – which I do a lot when working on web sites locally.

Update: This post gets read a lot. To summarize the linked article, there was a problem in the installer, it did not copy a file that Apache needs. The details are in the article. I found that I had to change to the root user (in terminal, su root) to copy the files.

A wintry day here in Prescott, AZ. The first photo is my garage roof with some snow. The garage is behind the house.

Next, here are two doves at the bird feeder outside my window. The horizontal lines are windows blinds. Note the finch in the tree behind the feeder waiting his turn to eat.

Global Warming and the Minefield of Unintended Consequences – Freakonomics – Opinion – New York Times Blog via kwout

Our all knowing rulers and central planners, who know what is good for us and who are bound and determined to impose their will upon us, made an error. Ops! Turns out that biofuels – or turning the last 1/2 inch of topsoil in the mid west into corn derived ethanol, causes more environmental problems than it fixes.

What a great example of why socialism failed! Only the marketplace, that is the result of free people making self interested decisions, can improve the human condition. Yes, freedom works!

By the way, the most destructive of these socialistic central planners are central banks – the US Federal Reserve, the EU central bank, et al.
