In Prescott, Az the last few years we have had a pair of Swainsons hawks spend the spring and summer with us. Each year they produced at least 1 offspring. They are back! I thought I saw one when I was driving to work earlier in the week, but it was just sunrise and I only saw it for a moment. Yesterday while walking the dogs I saw the pair of hawks. They are here for another breeding season. I observed them mating in a tree across the street from the tree where they have been nesting. It was a brief, noisy affair. Not surprising as they are a vocal species. I felt a little voyeuristic watching them, but hey, if they’re going to do their business in a tree I guess they can’t expect a lot of privacy.
Here’s a link to photos of the hawks I had taken in previous years.
