January 19th is the birthday of Robert E. Lee, who commanded the Confederate military in the War Between the States. Did you know that Lincoln asked General Lee to command the union army before the start of the war? Some people call this conflict the Civil War, but they are not correct. A civil war is between 2 or more factions from the same country for political control. The US War Between the States was a war of succession or independence, much like the America succession from England in 1776 – a conflict we call the War for Independence.
