02-Maverick_A31691284_18This border collie, Maverick, is available for adoption at the Yavapai Humane Society in Prescott, Az. I handled him today for his adoption photo (by Gary Gromer). He was a stray who survived a coyote attack, he has stitches on his head and neck with additional wounds on his legs. Thanks to the YHS medical staff he is healing.

Once, about a decade ago, I was walking my dogs in the late evening and 3 coyotes popped out of the brush just in from of us. It can be frightening, which is why I carry a handgun when I walk my dogs. Since I practice with it, I found I drew it and aimed at the coyotes without thinking. If you carry you need to train yourself to this level. I never had to fire it, but I don’t want to ever find myself in a situation where I need a gun but don’t have one.

Maverick is very underweight and bony, not uncommon for dogs that have been stray for a while. He has an easy going disposition and will make a good pet for a family familiar with border collies (they need lots of activity and training, they are high energy dogs).

In the next photo you see that Maverick is affectionate and he trusts people. I found him easy to handle.
