Hard to believe … but the latest High Sierra bug lets a user authenticate as root without a password. Oops. Glad I took this OS off my iMac this weekend.

inApple has won strong endorsement from the Electronic Frontier Foundationthis week, which says, “We commend Apple for its strong stance regarding user rights, transparency, and privacy.”
Now in the latest (fifth) edition of the EFF’s “Who Has Your Back” report which examines how closely Internet firms guard user privacy, the organization notes: “This is Apple’s fifth year in the report, and it has adopted every best practice we’ve identified as part of this report.”
Good job Apple!

inShame on you, Apple!
Yosemite’s enhanced Spotlight search can spy on your searches unless you disable a few features in System Preferences and Safari preferences. Instructions in the link. Come on Apple, are you taking a bad behavior lesson from Google? Very disappointing!!

inI updated my Apple OS’s to OS X Yosemite (10.10) and iOS 8.02. I’m downloading iOS 8.1 but it looks like Apple’s servers are busy/slow at the moment.
Initial impressions are positive (except for iTunes 12, which once again hid the sidebar. Here’s how to sort of fix it: http://www.mcelhearn.com/itunes-12-how-to-display-the-sidebar/) A new feature I like is AirDrop now works with OS X and iOS, formerly it was iOS only. Yosemite seems to be faster on start up, notably the interval from logging in to running is shorter.

inLooks like there are problems in Apple iOS land. The release iOS 8.0.1 to fix bugs in 8.0, and 8.0.1 was pulled when it caused major problems like these:
reports began flooding in that iOS 8.0.1 was breaking cellular reception and other features like Touch ID. Apple eventually removed the faulty update, but not before an untold number of users were able to install it. http://www.theverge.com/2014/9/24/6839235/apple-ios-8-0-1-released
Yes, it did say “breaking cellular reception”. And one of the main reasons I have a cell phone is cellular reception, i.e. making and receiving phone calls.
I was thinking of updating my phone today, thankfully I saw this article before I did so. Maybe I’ll update some time in October when Apple gets it right.
