Daylight Savings Time Dance: But not here in Arizona

Daylight Saving Time is the greatest continuing fraud ever perpetuated on American people. And this weekend, the effects of this cruel monster will rear its ugly head again. On Sunday morning, Americans across the country will have to set their clocks back one hour, and next week, the sun will begin its ambling lurch to eventually setting at 4:30 in the afternoon.

Once again the rest of the US does the DST dance. Why? The link above destroys the standard arguments for DST.

Arizona sometimes goes its own way from the national consensus. While this does not always make sense, mostly it does. Anyway, when the feds tried to ram DST down our throats one of our politicians said “the last thing Arizona needs is another hour of daylight in the summer”. Of course this reply is nonsense as the motion of the earth with respect to the sun determine how much light vs darkness any day has. In fact, every point on the earth gets exactly 1/2 year of light and 1/2 year of dark every year.

Daylight Savings Time: Not in Az

Most of you have just gone through the crazy daylight savings time clock change. Not us. In Az, we just don’t do that. This is one of the rather few good decisions made by the Az rulers. Of course the bulk of what they do varies between stupid to downright evil – these are politicians after all. But when they get one right, we take notice.

In 1918 DST was known as “War Time”. Here is an interesting history of Az and DST/War Time:  http://www.timeanddate.com/time/us/arizona-no-dst.html When I first moved to Az in ’77 and realized that we don’t do the change the clock nonsense, I thought “good idea!” I heard that one of our Congress critters said of DST “The last thing we need in Az is another hour of sunshine in the summertime”.

Enough opinions. Here are some facts: Every point on the earth is in daylight 1/2 of the year and darkness the other half. At the equator, each day of the year gets 12 hours of sun and 12 hours of dark. At the north and south poles, the light and dark phases are each 6 months long. How far you are between the equator and a pole, your latitude, determines how your light and dark phases are distributed across the year.
