On Friday I shot guns. Gary and I went pistol shooting with Gary’s former college professor Tom G. and a nephew of Tom’s.

Gun range pictures always feature people’s backs, for safety reasons. That’s my back, I am firing a .22 target pistol. Shooting is a lot of fun, if you’ve never tried it I recommend you add it to your 2017 list of new things to do.

For New Year’s Eve we went to a friend’s home for dinner. They made really good BBQ, we are still feeling stuffed this morning. We got home around 10 pm which is late for us oldsters.

I’d like to wish all who visit here a Happy New Year!

Prescott has a Whiskey Row Boot Drop, modeled on the NYC Times Square ball drop you’ve seen on TV. It has it’s own web site here. There’s a video on this page, towards the bottom. And here’s a snippet from the Daily Courier:

A 6-foot illuminated cowboy boot will be slowly lowered down from a 40-foot flagpole atop the historic Palace Building, which is over 30 feet tall. The last four years have drawn thousands of people of all ages. Much like the tradition in New York’s Times Square, where a large ball has dropped annually since 1907, the Whiskey Row Boot Drop event has become a Prescott tradition.

We’ve never attended the boot drop. Lot’s of reasons: it’s cold, we’re too old, too crowded, too many drivers have been drinking, Whiskey Row is a good place to avoid late at night, etc.

Goodbye 2014, you sure went by quickly.

Highlight: I retired after working for 37 years in IT and similar jobs.

Low point: A close friend who I’ve know for decades passed away.

new years eve

Is a year that ends with 13 unlucky?  Sure hope not.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year.  We don’t do much for New Year’s Eve, our partying days are well behind us. Gary said that in order for a drunk driver to harm us on New Year’s Eve, they would have to drive through the yard and the house. Thankfully that has not happened!  There were some fireworks in town which woke us up at midnight. Upset the 3 of the dogs, one started growling and barking to drive off whatever was making that noise. She succeeded, no fireworks got into the house. Good job, Lacy. 2 others were frightened and shaking, the third just slept. Her idea was the best one.

New Year’s resolutions? Not really. My intentions for 2013 is for all of us to stay well, enjoy our lives, be appreciative of what we have. Simple. Workable.

Happy New Year to all!

I’m not one to make New Year’s resolutions. They are hard to stick with, especially those related to deep seated behaviors like “exercise more”, “eat less juk food”, “save more for retirement”, etc. New Year’s celebration strikes me as being arbitary, but I happily accept a paid day off!!

Last night we heard some fireworks at midnight. They woke us up, otherwise we would have happily slept through New Year’s Eve midnight. The dogs did not like the noise one bit! Our lab (75 pounds of dog) insisted on squeezing her way between us on the bed for protection from the fireworks noise. I’m happy to report that she survived.

On the subject of  New Year’s Eve I think a lot of people see sleeping though midnight and not partying as a marker of middle age. When people ask what Gary and I were doing New Year’s Eve and I said “staying home and going to bed around 9”, the middle aged and older folks smiled knowingly.
