A garter snake in the grass, seen in Prescott AZ
Update: These are madrean alligator lizards! I did not see the legs on the darker one.
Lizard vs snake under my Jeep tire. When I first saw this, I thought it was a pair of lizards mating. But no, it looks like a fight to the death. The lizard has the snake’s neck in its jaws. Gary poked them gently with a stick to free the snake, but the lizard ran into the bushes with its prize.
In our Prescott, Az driveway.
The snakes that share our property are active now. I believe this is a wandering garter snake. It’s about 2 feet long and I saw it under the apple tree, which I had irrigated earlier in the morning. I think it was hunting for insects that were attracted to the water. These are not poisonous. They eat bugs and are welcome to share the yard. Our black lab Shady was very interested in the snake, she did not try to catch it.
